Colony of Fiji

The Colony of Fiji was a British possession in the South Pacific, ceded to the Crown by Indigenous Fijian chiefs. To work its sugar plantations the colonial administration imported large numbers of indentured labourers from South Asia, creating a lasting demographic divide. It gained independence in 1970.
