Colony of Jamaica

The Colony of Jamaica was a British possession in the Caribbean, the largest English-speaking island in the region. Seized from Spain, it became a major sugar producer dependent on enslaved African labour and a centre of slave resistance. After emancipation it remained under British rule until gaining independence in 1962.
