Colony of Singapore

The Colony of Singapore was a British Crown Colony at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, commanding the Strait of Malacca. A major free port and naval base whose fall to Japan in the Second World War was a notable British defeat, it later joined the federation of Malaysia before becoming a fully independent republic in 1965.
