Colony of the Bahamas

The Colony of the Bahamas was a British possession comprising an archipelago of islands and cays in the western Atlantic, southeast of Florida. Long a haven for shipping, piracy and later loyalist refugees and people of African descent, it remained under British rule until gaining independence as the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in 1973.
