County of Edessa
The County of Edessa was the first crusader state, established in 1098 by Baldwin of Boulogne in the region of modern southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. It was also the first to fall, conquered by Zengi, the atabeg of Mosul, in 1144 — an event that triggered the Second Crusade.
