Cyprus
Cyprus, an island at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, was a British Crown Colony until independence in 1960. The 1974 Turkish military intervention following a Greek junta-backed coup divided the island. The Republic of Cyprus (internationally recognised, EU member since 2004) and the Turkish-backed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus remain divided, with reunification negotiations repeatedly stalled.
