Czech Republic

The Czech Republic (Czechia), formed from the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, has deep roots in the medieval Bohemian Kingdom. The 1918 founding of Czechoslovakia by Tomas Masaryk was defining. Communist rule (1948-89) ended with the Velvet Revolution; the peaceful 1993 Velvet Divorce divided the federation. A founding EU and NATO member, Czechia is one of Central Europe's most developed democracies.
