Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic was the site of US military occupation (1916–1924) and the brutal Trujillo dictatorship (1930–1961). The assassination of Trujillo in 1961 was followed by instability and the US military intervention of 1965, when President Johnson sent 22,000 troops to prevent what he feared would be a communist takeover during a civil conflict between constitutionalists and military factions.
