East Pakistan

The eastern wing of Pakistan at partition in 1947, separated from West Pakistan by 1,600 km of Indian territory. East Pakistan was home to the majority of Pakistan's population and the heart of the Bengali-speaking world. The suppression of Bengali nationalism culminated in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War; with Indian military intervention, East Pakistan became the independent nation of Bangladesh on 16 December 1971.
