Electorate of Hesse
The Electorate of Hesse, or Kurhessen, centred on Kassel, kept its archaic 'Elector' title even after the Holy Roman Empire's dissolution. Having sided with Austria in the Austro-Prussian War, it was annexed outright by Prussia in 1866 and merged into the new province of Hesse-Nassau.
