Estado da India (Portuguese India)
The Estado da India was the collective name for all Portuguese possessions in Asia, governed by a viceroy resident in Goa. At its height it included trading posts and fortresses from East Africa to Japan, controlling the spice trade through a network of fortified ports and naval patrols. Portugal retained Goa, Daman, and Diu until they were seized by India in December 1961.
