Federal Republic of Germany (FRG)
The Federal Republic of Germany was established on May 23, 1949, in the three Western occupation zones of Germany under Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. It pursued a policy of Western integration — joining NATO in 1955 and becoming a founding member of the European Economic Community in 1957 — while the Basic Law enshrined democratic governance and human rights. The FRG's 'economic miracle' (Wirtschaftswunder) of the 1950s-60s made it the engine of Western European recovery. On October 3, 1990, following German reunification, the FRG absorbed the German Democratic Republic, retaining its constitutional framework and becoming the united Germany.
