France

One of Europe's oldest and most influential states, France has shaped Western civilization through the Enlightenment, the Revolution of 1789, and Napoleonic legal and administrative systems exported across the continent. After 1945 it became a founding member of NATO and the EU, the only non-anglophone permanent member of the UN Security Council with nuclear weapons, and a central pillar of European integration.
