Georgia
Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union on April 9, 1991. Unlike most Soviet successor states, Georgia initially declined to join the CIS, reflecting its strongly anti-Russian national sentiment. Georgian independence was accompanied by violent conflicts over the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, in which Russian forces played an ambiguous role.
