Georgia
The last of the original thirteen colonies (1733), founded as a buffer and a haven for the 'worthy poor', Georgia grew into a Deep South cotton power after the cotton gin was invented there in 1793. Sherman's 1864 march to the sea cut through it; a century later Atlanta became the headquarters of the civil-rights movement and the South's commercial capital. It is now a fast-growing hub of logistics, film and technology.
