Ghana
Ghana is a West African state on the Gulf of Guinea, formerly the British colony of the Gold Coast. In 1957 it became the first sub-Saharan African colony to gain independence, an event that resonated across the decolonising continent. Its name evokes the medieval Ghana Empire to the north-west. Rich in gold and cocoa, its capital is Accra.
