Gibraltar

Gibraltar was captured by an Anglo-Dutch fleet in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession and formally ceded by Spain to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), becoming a strategically vital naval base controlling the entrance to the Mediterranean.
