Grand Duchy of Hesse
The Grand Duchy of Hesse, commonly called Hesse-Darmstadt, was raised from a landgraviate in 1806. Its territory straddled the River Main: the northern province of Upper Hesse joined the North German Confederation in 1867, while the whole state entered the German Empire in 1871.
