Guatemala
Guatemala's democratic decade (1944–1954) was ended by the CIA-backed coup against President Jacobo Árbenz, ushering in decades of military dictatorship and civil war. The subsequent counterinsurgency (1960–1996), backed by the United States, resulted in some 200,000 deaths and what a UN commission termed genocide against indigenous Maya communities.
