Haiti
Haiti declared independence on 1 January 1804 after the only successful slave revolution in history defeated French, British, and Spanish expeditionary forces. It became the first Black republic and the second republic in the Western Hemisphere. The former French colony of Saint-Domingue had been France most profitable colony. The new nation was required to pay France an enormous indemnity for recognized independence — a debt not fully discharged until 1947.
