Hawaii
An independent Polynesian kingdom overthrown by American settlers in 1893 and annexed in 1898, Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959 and is culturally its own world — a Native Hawaiian, plantation-immigrant and Asian-American society unlike any mainland culture. Sugar and pineapple plantations drew workers from Asia and the Pacific. The 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor brought the US into World War II.
