Inca Empire (Tawantinsuyu)

The Inca Empire (Tawantinsuyu, the Four Quarters) was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America, stretching from modern Colombia to central Chile. Governed from Cusco, it controlled its territories through a highly organised road network, mit'a labour system, and redistribution of goods. A civil war between Atahualpa and Huascar immediately preceded the Spanish arrival, weakening the state at its most critical moment.
