India
India, the world's most populous country, achieved independence from British rule in 1947 under Jawaharlal Nehru through a largely non-violent independence movement led by Gandhi. Partition simultaneously created Pakistan, triggering mass migration. As a constitutional democracy and secular republic, India developed a mixed economy and after economic liberalisation in 1991 became one of the world's fastest-growing major economies.
