Ireland
Ireland, under British rule following the Acts of Union (1800), won independence for 26 counties in 1921-22 after the War of Independence. The Irish Free State became the Republic of Ireland in 1949. Northern Ireland remained part of the UK, where the Troubles (1968-98) claimed over 3,500 lives until the Good Friday Agreement. Ireland embraced economic liberalisation in the 1990s Celtic Tiger era and became one of Europe's most prosperous small nations.
