Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG)

The CJNG formed in 2010 out of the Milenio Cartel, a former Sinaloa Cartel affiliate, under the leadership of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho'. It expanded aggressively from its base in Jalisco state, using paramilitary-style tactics, armored vehicles and a large enforcer wing to seize trafficking territory across nearly all of Mexico, becoming, alongside the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the two dominant transnational criminal organizations fueling the Mexican Drug War. CJNG fought sustained territorial battles against the Sinaloa Cartel in Baja California, Ciudad Juarez, Zacatecas and Chiapas, and clashed directly with Mexican security forces, including a 2015 rocket-propelled-grenade attack that downed an army helicopter. Oseguera was killed by Mexican security forces on 22 February 2026, a major blow to the organization's leadership during the ongoing conflict.
