Japan
Japan is an island nation in East Asia with a continuous imperial tradition dating from antiquity. After centuries of feudal rule culminating in the Edo shogunate, the Meiji Restoration (1868) transformed Japan into a modern constitutional monarchy that rapidly industrialized and became a major world power. Following defeat in World War II, Japan adopted a pacifist constitution under American occupation and rebuilt as a democratic, constitutional monarchy, becoming the world's second-largest economy for much of the late 20th century.
