Kingdom of Bavaria

The Kingdom of Bavaria was elevated from an electorate in 1806 under Napoleon's reorganisation of the German lands. The largest of the South German states, it sided with Austria in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and retained considerable autonomy — its own army, railways and diplomacy — even after joining the German Empire in 1871, where it held special reserved rights. The monarchy ended in the revolution of 1918.
