Kingdom of Dahomey
The Kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin) was a major power in West Africa from the 17th century. It became one of the most active participants in the Atlantic slave trade, raiding neighboring peoples and selling captives to European traders at the port of Ouidah. At its peak it supplied thousands of enslaved people annually to the Americas before being conquered by France in 1894.
