Kingdom of Denmark

The Kingdom of Denmark emerged as a unified realm under Harald Bluetooth around 958, who also oversaw the Christianization of the Danish people. Danish Vikings had already made their mark on European history through the Great Heathen Army's conquest of large portions of England, establishing the Danelaw, and through the settlement of Normandy and raids across the Frankish kingdoms. Under Cnut the Great in the early 11th century, Denmark became the center of a North Sea empire encompassing England and Norway. Though that empire dissolved after Cnut's death, Denmark remained a major Baltic power through the medieval period, eventually leading the Kalmar Union from 1397 and continuing as a constitutional monarchy into the modern era.
