Kingdom of Greece
The modern Greek state emerged from the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829). The Kingdom was established in 1832 under Bavarian prince Otto. Greece expanded through the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and was occupied by the Axis in WWII. The monarchy was abolished by referendum in 1974, establishing the current Hellenic Republic.
