Kingdom of Kongo
The Kingdom of Kongo (spanning present-day Angola, DRC, and Congo) was a centralised state that became one of the first African kingdoms to establish diplomatic relations with European powers after Portuguese contact in 1483. Initially a willing participant in limited slave trading, Kongo was progressively undermined as Portuguese demand for enslaved people escalated, contributing to the kingdom's fragmentation by the 17th century.
