Kingdom of Lombardo-Venetia
The Kingdom of Lombardo-Venetia was created by the Congress of Vienna as a crown land of the Austrian Empire, administered by a viceroy from Milan (Lombardy) and Venice (Venetia). The wealthiest and most industrialised region of the Italian peninsula, it was held under strict Austrian military and political control. Lombardy was lost to Piedmont-Sardinia following the Second Italian War of Independence (1859). Venetia remained Austrian until 1866, when Austria's defeat by Prussia in the Seven Weeks' War forced its cession to Italy — completing the territorial unification of the peninsula.
