Kingdom of the Franks

The Kingdom of the Franks was founded by Clovis I in 481, who united the Frankish tribes and converted to Christianity, forging a powerful alliance with the Roman Catholic Church. Under the Merovingian dynasty, the Franks expanded across Gaul, displacing the Visigoths and absorbing neighboring Germanic peoples. The Carolingian dynasty replaced the Merovingians in 751 and reached its apex under Charlemagne, who was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 800. The kingdom was formally dissolved by the Treaty of Verdun in 843, which partitioned it among Charlemagne's grandsons into the precursors of modern France and Germany.
