Kingdom of Wessex
The Kingdom of Wessex was the southernmost of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, traditionally founded in 519 by Cerdic and Cynric. For centuries it competed with Mercia and Northumbria for dominance over England, but its defining moment came in the late 9th century when Alfred the Great successfully resisted the Viking Great Heathen Army, preserving English Christianity and culture and laying the groundwork for a unified English kingdom. Alfred's descendants systematically reconquered the Danelaw territories, and in 927 his grandson Athelstan brought the last Viking and Celtic kingdoms under his rule, becoming the first King of England. Wessex thus ceased to exist as a separate kingdom, its identity absorbed into the new Kingdom of England.
