Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan declared independence from the Soviet Union on August 31, 1991, and joined the CIS. Of the Central Asian successor states, Kyrgyzstan initially pursued the most liberal political path under President Askar Akayev, though subsequent decades saw recurring political instability and 'colour revolution'-style upheavals.
