Latin Empire
The Latin Empire of Constantinople was the Crusader state established after the Fourth Crusade sacked Constantinople in 1204 and replaced the Byzantine Empire. Its emperors were western European nobles, predominantly from Flanders and France. The Latin Empire was consistently contested by the Byzantine successor states, particularly the Nicaean Empire, and was finally extinguished in 1261 when Michael VIII Palaiologos reconquered Constantinople.
