Lithuania
Lithuania was the first Soviet republic to declare independence, doing so on March 11, 1990 — before the USSR's formal dissolution. The Soviet Union imposed an economic blockade and briefly attempted to suppress the declaration by military force in January 1991, but Lithuanian independence was internationally recognised following the failed Moscow coup of August 1991. Lithuania declined to join the CIS and subsequently acceded to NATO and the EU.
