Maine

Part of Massachusetts until it entered as a free state under the 1820 Missouri Compromise, Maine is a maritime, heavily forested Yankee frontier with a long Atlantic coastline of fishing villages and shipbuilding towns. Logging, paper and lobstering have long anchored its economy. It is the least densely populated state east of the Mississippi.
