Maryland
A Catholic-founded proprietary colony (1632) that became a tobacco-and-Chesapeake society, Maryland was a border slave state held in the Union by force in 1861 to protect Washington, which it surrounds on three sides. Baltimore grew into a major port and industrial city. Its identity bridges the Tidewater South and the urban Northeast.
