Mexico

Mexico achieved independence from Spain in 1821. The 19th century brought war with the US (1846-48) and the French intervention (1861-67). The Mexican Revolution (1910-20) produced a new constitution and the PRI one-party state that governed until 2000. Oil wealth, NAFTA, and persistent drug-cartel violence characterise modern Mexico, which has become a major manufacturing hub.
