Michigan

Settled overwhelmingly by Yankees moving west along the Erie Canal and Great Lakes, Michigan industrialised around the automobile, with Detroit becoming the global capital of carmaking and the birthplace of mass production and the United Auto Workers. Its two peninsulas are nearly surrounded by the Great Lakes. Mining, timber and later autos drove successive booms.
