Montana
A Far West state of mining and ranching — its motto 'Oro y Plata' names the boom economy — Montana was shaped by the copper kings of Butte, the cattle frontier and the railroads. Vast and sparsely peopled, it spans the northern Rockies and the high plains. Its history of corporate mining power gave rise to a strong labour and reform tradition.
