Montenegro

Montenegro developed as a principality from the 1850s under Prince Danilo and Prince Nikola, gaining formal independence recognised at the Congress of Berlin in 1878 and becoming a kingdom in 1910. Despite fierce resistance it was conquered by Austria-Hungary in 1916 and incorporated into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918.
