Mughal Empire

The Mughal Empire was the dominant power on the Indian subcontinent from the sixteenth century, but by the mid-eighteenth century it had fragmented into semi-independent successor states. The declining imperial authority allowed regional powers such as the Nawab of Bengal to act independently and enabled the British East India Company to exploit political divisions. The Battle of Plassey in 1757 accelerated the empire's collapse by demonstrating that European forces could dominate the subcontinent.
