Nevada

Admitted hastily in 1864 on the silver wealth of the Comstock Lode — and to add a free-state vote — Nevada is a Far West mining state on the arid Great Basin, most of which is federally owned. In the 20th century it legalised gambling and quick divorce, building Las Vegas and Reno into entertainment capitals. Mining, tourism and now data centres drive it.
