New France

The French Catholic settlement of the St Lawrence (Quebec, 1608), Acadia, and lower Louisiana. A communal, Catholic, comparatively consensual culture that built closer alliances and kinship with indigenous nations than the English colonies did. Mostly outside the present United States (Quebec), but surviving within it as the Cajun/Creole culture of Acadiana and New Orleans after the British conquest of 1763 and the Acadian expulsion.
