New Hampshire

A New England state of independent hill towns whose motto 'Live Free or Die' captures a libertarian streak within the communitarian Yankee tradition. It was the first colony to declare independence from Britain and to adopt its own constitution in 1776. Its first-in-the-nation presidential primary gives it outsized political weight.
