New York

Founded as Dutch New Netherland in 1624, New York grew on the trade of its magnificent harbour and the Erie Canal into the nation's commercial and immigrant gateway and most populous state for most of US history. Its New Netherland roots left a pluralist, money-minded culture; upstate was settled by New England Yankees. New York City remains a global capital of finance, media and culture.
