Niger
Niger is a large landlocked West African state spanning the Sahara and Sahel, taking its name from the river that crosses its south-west. A former French colony independent since 1960, it is among the world's poorest countries and a major producer of uranium. It has experienced repeated coups and a jihadist insurgency.
