North Dakota
A northern-Plains wheat state of German and Scandinavian farm settlement on the Far West frontier, North Dakota built a cooperative, agrarian-populist politics expressed in its state-owned bank and mill. Long among the most rural states, it was transformed in the 2010s by the Bakken shale-oil boom. Its prairie gives way to the Badlands in the west.
